Barfleur ranked most beautiful village of France in Val de Saire pulls its origin from the time of the Vikings who settled down in the north of Cotentin towards the year 900. Barfleur gained respectability in the XIth and XIIth century by becoming official port of boarding of Norman Dukes and English Kings towards the conquests of the kingdom of England : William the Conqueror, Richard Coeur de Lion and Jean Sans Terre. The maritime activity of the port will be one of the most important of Normandy up to the Middle Ages then declines in favor of Cherbourg under the influence of the French sovereigns.
